Of all the elements, the sage should take water as his preceptor.
Water is yielding but all conquering.
Water extinguishes Fire, or finding itself likely to be defeated, escapes as steam and reforms.
Water washes away soft earth, or when confronted by rocks, seeks a way around.
Water corrodes Iron til it crumbles to dust; it saturates the atmosphere.
So that wind dies. Water gives way to obstacles with deceptive humility.
For no power can prevent it following its destined course to the sea.
Water conquers by yielding; it never attacks but always wins the last battle.
The Sage who makes himself as water is distinguished for his humility,
He embraces passivity, acts from nonaction and conquers the world.

Water is a pretty powerful element. As we prepare for winter I want to talk about this element. In Chinese Medicine, winter is associated with the water element. The organs that go with this element are the kidneys and bladder. The emotion associated with the water element is fear. When water is in balance it is able to manage fears. Face them and deal with them appropriately. When you are out of balance the fear becomes overwhelming. When in balance you also know when to slow down!
What does all of this mean? With everything there are so many layers. So let’s take the top layer this week and break it down.
Our bodies are made up of 60% water. That is over half! Winter. When movement slackens as matter and energy concentrates. Plants submerge their energy into their roots, animals get their winter coats, their hides thicken,and bodies of water harden into ice. While underneath the surface there is hidden activity of renewal and preparing for rebirth in the spring. Everything moves slower in the winter.
This is a period of hibernation. Just like the bear. The bear lives from accumulated reserves until his hunger awakes him in the spring.
When was the last time you literally sat and did nothing? No phone, computer, book, television, radio. Just sat and looked out the window. At the trees, birds preparing for winter, deer eating the grass. Consolidating your energy. Regenerating it.
As I have said before, this season isn’t designed for that! It is my busiest time, and as a single mom, double the responsibilities! And I run my own business! I am a fire girl! I burn and burn until I burn out. I am learning to LISTEN to my body and I am specifically carving out time to rest. Meditate. Focus on recharging. I order gifts online. I downsized my Christmas alot! All I really want is time. Time with my friends, family, hearing my children laugh, and honestly time to dream. I used to love daydreaming. Pretending. We are taught to stop doing that at an early age. But by God I am relearning how to look out the window and dream again.
During this time we tend to overextend ourselves, eat and drink foods we don’t normally consume, engage with family members we don’t normally engage with. Things that take us out of reenergizing and push us into a zone where we are using up life energy for later on.
If you have watched my Facebook Lives I have shown you where on my face it tells me I have robbed energy from my 60’s and if I do not slow down and intentionally regenerate energy I am potentially going to have health issues then.
Because I let society dictate what I needed to do and I allowed family to push me to do things I wasn’t designed to do I now have to regenerate this energy!. When I see my weaknesses written on my face and I don’t listen to my body I am stealing life force from my future! When I think about it that way it changes how I use my time. I am now savoring my downtime.
I sat on the sofa Saturday night, listening to the fabulous Louis York playing after enjoying a delicious meal and enjoying good company. Laughing, talking, sometimes just sitting quietly holding hands. Leaving every dirty dish on the table! These are the moments that I would have rushed through to clean up or to go to a movie, or a concert, asking what do you want to DO. Instead of just being still.
When I take time to nurture myself and my water energy I am able to move mountains! My fire energy flames back up and allows me to do what is necessary throughout the day. Especially in the winter months I find so hard to deal with!
Just look out your window. See what nature is doing and reflect that. Slow down, take time, nurture yourself, listen to your body. When you take care of the inside it will reflect on the outside. As above, so below. Your face is a map. To your body, your spirit, your emotions. Learn to read its language.
